About This Competition
The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is organized by the Singapore Mathematical Society and serves as the primary competitive mathematics event in Singapore. With three categories (Junior, Senior, Open), it covers secondary through pre-university levels. Round 1 features short-answer problems, while Round 2 is proof-based for top qualifiers.
How to Prepare
Master Short-Answer Problem Techniques
SMO uses short-answer format requiring exact numerical answers. Practice computing accurately and checking your work, as there's no partial credit.
Focus on Speed and Accuracy Together
With 25 questions in limited time, you need both speed and precision. Practice mental computation shortcuts and verify answers through alternative methods.
Use SMO Past Papers from SMS
The Singapore Mathematical Society publishes past SMO papers. Also use 'Singapore Mathematical Olympiad: Problems and Solutions' book series.
Gateway to IMO Selection in Singapore
Strong SMO performers are invited to the Singapore IMO training team. Use SMO as motivation to deepen your mathematical knowledge.
