About This Competition
The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), founded in 2012, promotes and celebrates female mathematical talent worldwide. Despite its European origin, over 55 countries from all continents now participate, each sending a team of up to 4 female students.
The competition uses the IMO format (6 problems, 2 days) and the same rigorous scoring. EGMO has been instrumental in increasing female participation in mathematical olympiads globally. The 2025 EGMO was held in Andorra, and the 2026 edition is planned for Kazakhstan.
How to Prepare
Focus on All Four Olympiad Topics
EGMO tests algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory at a high level. Balance your preparation across all four areas rather than specializing.
Write Clear, Self-Contained Proofs
EGMO proofs are graded by an international jury. Write each proof so it can be understood without external context. Define notation and state intermediate results clearly.
Use the EGMO Book and Past Problems
'European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad' book by Sherrina Chen and past EGMO problems (available on egmo.org) are the best preparation resources.
A Unique and Supportive Community
EGMO provides a welcoming environment for young women in mathematics. The connections and friendships formed often last throughout your mathematical career.
